Flagging is a temporary, brightly colored tape or other material which is tied or nailed to trees or stakes. It is used by surveyors, engineers, and foresters to mark the general location of some item of interest. It is not uncommon to find flagging tied to trees near a survey marker. Since most flagging is designed to degrade over time, the presence of flagging near a survey mark indicates that the station was used in the recent past.
