Holton Base Line (1891)

The Holton Base Line in Ripley County, Indiana was measured from June through October, 1891. The line was measured with three techniques, two of which were experimental: bar-in-ice and 100-meter metallic tapes. Assistant A. T. Mosman was in charge of the measurements, with Assistant R. S. Woodward responsible for the bar-in-ice experiment and Assistants Woodward and [http://www.history.noaa.gov/cgsbios/biot5.html O. H. Tittmann] performing the metallic tape measurements.

The measurement for the triangulation base was performed twice with contact bar apparatus, and the measurement was accomplished from July 28 to August 13, 1891. The length of the base line, reduced to sea level, was 5,500.576 meters, +/- 4 mm.

The triangulation network which connected the base line to the larger network was observed in 1889 through 1890. The observers were A. T. Mosman, [http://www.history.noaa.gov/cgsbios/biof1.html W. B Fairfield], and [http://www.history.noaa.gov/cgsbios/bioc3.html J. B. Boutelle]. The stations of the network were located and set in 1887 by [http://www.history.noaa.gov/cgsbios/biop9.html F. W. Perkins].
