Introduction: DSFILES is free NGS software designed to read NGS .dat files of datasheets and either join them or split them. Generally .dat files containing all the datasheets of a county are downloaded from the NGS Yearly Archives page.

Usage notes:

  • DSFILES has 2 classes of functions
    1. joining .dat files into one .dat file

    2. splitting a .dat file into smaller files by either:

      • USGS Quad Name
      • County/City Name
      • Min/Max Areas
      • number of PID datasheets per file
  • When preparing to split a file, DSFILES first creates an index file so that you know what each filename that it makes will contain.
  • If you use the Min/Max Areas split, DSFILES will make an index file for Alaska and you will have to edit the Max and Min values yourself.
